Tar River:Striped Bass season is closed in all water of the Tar Pamlico and its tributaries downstream of Rocky Mount Mill dam. Sizable Striped Bass have been caught from Old Sparta all the way to Rocky Mount over the last week in decent numbers especially early in the day. It appears the Hickory Shad spawning run has come to an end for this year. A few Striped Bass were observed just upstream of Highway 64, while rather high numbers of Striped Bass were sampled just downstream of Fishing Creek. The American Shad that were collected were found near the Hwy. Spring weather has finally arrived to the Lower Tar and Pamlico rivers, bringing with it warm temperatures and high winds this past week. Streamflow was steady this week, with 6200 cfs at Lock & Dam 1 during sampling. Go to the beach or get on a boat and fluke. Bottom linethe peak of the shad run has finally arrived. Some Striped Bass were sampled near Battle Park and Dunbar, but the majority of Striped Bass were in the vicinity of Fishing Creek. Anglers using live bait had the best luck, but some fish were caught on artificial baits including topwater plugs. As of late, there are shad being caught at both Lock 1 and 2. Anglers fishing deeper pools/runs closer to Deer Creek Reservoir may find swinging soft hackle patterns, or dead drifting balanced leeches and streamers pretty effective for hungry brown trout and rainbow trout. Anglers are reminded the Striped Bass harvest season will be open April 2430 in the upper river zone (upstream of the U.S. 258 Highway bridge at Scotland Neck to the base of Roanoke Rapids Dam). The river was relatively clear at moderate levels and decreasing slightly. A few Striped Bass were also collected on April 22, near the Hwy 48 bridge in Gaston.
